WHY DO IT?

"There's an old man with a bum hand, sitting with a dog who's afraid of his shadow.....On a park bench, slightly out of reach from the concept of reality.

People passing by see the tears he's crying, but their hearts of stone says it really doesn't matter. He's an old fool from the old school, and they're the upward mobile movers and the shakers.....

You've got to give a little, or else your going to find yourselves plopped right down, smack dab in the middle of a hard rain. Like a discarded lover without any covers. Driving you crazy 'bout to go insane."

This is the opening verse from a song I wrote years ago. Didn't know at the time that it would become something that God would call ReCovery Church to.....but isn't that the way God works?

I thought we were only going to deal with those in addiction. Those who's bad choices had taken them down the dark path to a life of what some refer to as "slow suicide". A life of bondage to their drug of choice. But God called and instructed us (ReCovery Church) to put some legs to what we believe. In other words, don't just talk about it, demonstrate the love of the Father to those who have been marginalized in our society. Treat them with some dignity, acknowledging that they also have been created in the image of Almighty God.

So this is why we do a breakfast giveaway every other week. A hot meal seems like a little thing, but we wanted to take this out a little farther. We wanted to offer them choices. We wanted to add a special touch to the meal, such as giving them options in choosing their breakfast. I remember one of the first time we did a breakfast, we had a young girl come off the street. My wife, Vicki, took her order and asked, "How would you like your eggs cooked?" The young girl kind of hung her head and said, "It doesn't matter. Beggars can't be choosey." My wife looked into the young girl's eyes and said, "Honey there ain't no beggars here. How would you like your eggs cooked." Sounds like a little thing, but to this young girl, it may have been the first time in a long time that someone had treated her with a little respect and dignity, and that she wasn't looked down on.

We try to spend time with those who come into to eat a hot meal. We sit with them and just talk (and the most important part is that we listen) to what they have to say. Some are difficult because they don't want to talk, but we sit with them anyway.

The one thing that we don't want to do is look down on these folks as if we thought we were better than they were. We approach each breakfast as a servant there to meet their needs  during that meal. We offer a place where they can take a hot shower and maybe get a fresh set of clothes to wear. We offer razors, shave cream, deodorant, socks, and other necessities that you and I take for granted. Bottom line is that we simply want to love on those who stop by. In that act of love, if we can drop some Jesus "seeds', sharing the gospel, we do. We may never know or see what happened to that seed that was planted in them, but we trust God that He will use it in the life of each individual.

We will be downtown this morning in about 4 hours, the doors will be opened. The coffee will be hot. The doughnut lady will have brought her offering of doughnuts to be given out. Eggs will be cracked, and the waffle iron will be hot. It does not matter how many come by to eat. Whether it is 25 or 2. We will be about the Kingdom business today. Bless those who come by, Father. And may they find You this morning. In Jesus name, Amen.

Matthew 6:40 - "And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of My brethren, you did it to Me."

God on you...

TRADING "ME"

( A reprint from October 2009)

I want to get "me" out of the way.
But "me" keeps trying to worm its way back into control of everything.
I even spend energy trying to deny "me" and press on with this pursuit of Jesus.
"me" keeps popping back up.
Oh if there was just some way I could kill "me".
Trade my "me" for Jesus' "Me"
He (Jesus) does make the offer in Matthew 11...

"Come to "me"....Jesus cries out!
Maybe that is it.
The secret step.
The hidden destiny.
The keys to unlock the future.
The next plateau.
Trade "me's"

If I understand anything on this side of heaven
it's that when you do business with Jesus
you never trade down....
you always trade up...
Whatever you surrender to him,
he will replace with something
much better...
more complete...
than what you had.
Trade your old nature in
and see how much better the new nature is that
Jesus works into your life.

Truth be known......when I came to Jesus
I had to die.
All of "me".
I, me, mine....
all had to die and surrender to the work
of God's Holy Spirit.
Die to "me" and be resurrected to new life
in Christ.
The power of sin in "me"
and
The power of sin through "me"
was destroyed when I was born again.
The old "me" died.
The new "me" was created.
Created?
yes!

"If any man is in Christ, he is a new creation."
being this new creation
my "me" has to learn how to live in an entirely
different manner.
This is where direction and guidance
from the
Holy Spirit
comes into play.
I only follow Him.
Do what He tells me to
(yes! He does speak and instructs)
and follow where He says to go.
New "me"
New life
New way of dealing with the world.
Not bad....
this dog will hunt!!!

God on you.........

WEDNESDAY MORNING RAMBLE

Done a lot of thinking this week (and it's only Wednesday). Found myself taking quick inventory of what I believe about God, His nature, His character, and the way I see Him in the Scripture I read. Bottom linen is that I know God.....but I don't really know God. By that I mean there is so much more that He has not revealed to me. SO it's kind of ignorant on my part to run around thumping my chest and telling others about Him.

Now before your axle gets bent because of what I just wrote, let me explain. Do I share with others about this God who saved me? Yes. Do I share Scripture with them? Sure do. But such has to be done from a place of humility, not from thinking that I am the answer man to all things theological. When I teach or share, I try to be as simple in what I say as best I can. Why? Because I do believe the good news, or the gospel, is simple. We are all sinners in need of being saved. Hard for someone to grasp this idea of being a sinner if they don't see themselves as such. Oh I could beat them over the head with a list of rules and commandments that they may have broken, but that isn't what God has called me to do. He has called me to simply share HIS truth. TO give the Holy Spirit room and a place to move on the human hearts of those who are listening. The Holy Spirit takes my feeble efforts of teaching and uses them like a mirror so others can see themselves as God sees them. That they may be convicted of how they have lived....the choices they have made that has kept them outside God's will for their life. To realize that God is offering them the greatest gift mankind has ever been given....salvation.

At this point in my life, there are certain things that don't seem to be kosher anymore. There are certain words and terms that you will have a hard time finding in messages these days. Words such as "Purity". Somehow this term has been turned to represent an antiquated, out dated view of life. I have taught on Purity before, and have been reminded by others that we live in the age of Grace. In other words, the implication is that "we can do, live, and participate in what we want to even if it runs counter to God's will for us. After all, we are just human. All we have to do is confess and God will forgive us." Really! Have we taken the eternal things of God and boiled them down to such a state to use them as a license to sin?  Has purity become a word associated with those who are out of touch with society and culture. If this be the case, they may I always be out of touch. The purity that I speak of comes from One who IS pure. One who has taken the sin of the world upon Himself so that we could live a life of purity, free from the stain and stench this worlds spreads to those who live in the squalor and garbage that only this world can offer. Christ paid the price for us to rise above this darkness to stand (with Him) in a new life. Sounds like a good deal to be Pure, especially when it comes from Him.

Don't mention "Blood" when you teach. That is so offensive to people. Well let's get one thing straight. We do not have a bloodless gospel. We do  not have a blood free-Jesus. We do not have a sanitized version of salvation that is palatable to all people. We do not have a salvation that is not offensive to our sin nature.. We need to be offended, but in our offense we need to remember that It is God's kindness (or goodness) that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). We need to be awakened to the fact that sin is offensive to God. So offensive that He sent His only begotten Son (to die as payment for our sin) so that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Maybe this is why my live verse has been (and always will be) is I Corinthians 2:2 -  For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. All life ...new life free from the bondage of our sin, begins at a place of death. The cross. How can I look upon the idea of someone else taking my place, my punishment for the things I have done, and the state of my heart that runs contrary to what God wants, and not be filled with gratitude and thankfulness. How can I not receive His salvatio which will transport me into the light of this new life He desires me to live?

I know that this morning's posting has been a ramble-tamble of thoughts and words. I'm not so sure that I put down what was in my heart or head in such a way that it made sense. Bottom line is this. What will you do with this day? What will you do with these next 24 hours that God has given to each of us? Will we follow Him as we move through our day....listening for His voice in our thoughts, our heart, and our minds? Or will be simply navigate our own way giving no thought about God today?

I guess we all have to choose, don't we.

God on you...

I GAIN MORE WHEN I HAVE LESS

Ecclesiastes 3:6
A time to gain, and a time to lose. A time to keep and a time to throw away.

Sounds almost like an inventory doesn't it?
Sounds almost like someone taking Step #4 and #5 of the Twelve Steps, doesn't it?
The taking of a searching and fearless moral inventory. Identifying those character flaws that we have developed over the years.
Throwing away all the bad.
God's additions doesn't always look like we think it should.
Addition in God's kingdom always involves throwing away.

Throwing away things that weigh us down.
Throwing away heavy, burdensome ideas, concepts that clutter our brain and fuel bad decisions.

God's addition always leads us to a better way.
I accumulated a world view that was (wait for it) created by the dictates and group behavior of the world.
In other words, living in the world, which is a fallen, sinful world, I learn how to do business, live life, and get by using the ways and means of society and culture. This usually adds up to some stinking thinking on my part.

If you don't see it this way, then think on this.
The Hebrews were in slavery down in Egypt for over 400 years.
I'm not sure, but I do believe that if you live in a society for 400 years, you tend to pick up the behaviors and customs of that society. You start to talk like them, think like them, see life as they see life. In other words, you develop a world view that is influenced by the culture and society you are living in.
Along comes God.

"I'm here to free you from the bondage of the Egyptians."
A collective "Yahoo!" goes up from the Hebrews.
But they didn't read the fine print.
You know the part where God is going to take them out into the wilderness and lead them to a land of promise.

God took them out of Egypt..
but then He had to take Egypt out of them.

He took them out to a place where He became their only source of survival.
There weren't any stores or markets.

No clothing outlets.
No economy of any size, shape or fashion.
God was the sole source of survival.

There they would learn how to live.
There they would trade off all the baggage of Egypt for the freedom of living under His rule and reign.
Or that is the way it was suppose to work. God didn't miss the mark, the people did.
We have rebellion among the priests...
Fire comes down and consumes two of them.
We have rebellion in the camp. Ground splits open and 250 die.
Oh yeah, don't forget the whole "golden calf" thing.

Bottom line...
God's call to each of us is to have "LESS" of the world...To throw away the things of this world that we have placed to high a value on...

and accept the eternal things of God.....
And accept the eternal God.

Think on these things today.

You might want to consider having less in your life.
I know that I am going to take a look at this for myself....

God on you...

CONSIDER WHAT GOD HAS DONE

Mark 15:34 - ...."My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"

Perhaps one of the most heart wrenching verses you can read in Scripture. Jesus on the cross suffering with all the pain and agony. But there was a pain far greater than the physical ones that He felt. The very fact that the entire sin of the world had been placed on Him. He was ground zero for the full weight and wrath of God to be poured out on Him. He took our punishment and paid the sin-debt you and I owed. A debt that was beyond our ability to pay. Not being able to pay that debt, placed us in a position of being eternally separated from God. But Jesus came....He came to pay my debt.....and to pay yours.

Reading the journal of Jim Elliot, I came across a statement he made. I had never thought of those words "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" in this way. Those were the words that Christ cried out from the cross.  God has not forsaken us.  Romans 5:8 tells us, "But God demonstrated His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." When I was living my life outside the will of God....living my life with no thought as to Him or the precious gift that was offered to me through salvation....He died for me.

Jim Elliot goes on to write in his journal...."Such words Jesus offered from the cross should cause me to cry out, "My God....My God....Why have You accepted me?" This comes from a place of seeing ourselves as we truly are....sinners in need of being saved. Sin isn't the deed we do. Those deeds are evidence of the very nature that we carry around daily. From little white lies to genocide, a heart living by the old nature...the flesh (as the Apostle Paul referred to it ) the sin nature. It controls our thinking with such deception that we don't ever realize we are being controlled. Christ came to break the power of sin. He came to pay the debt of sin. Christ empowered us against the presence of sin.

When I look at my life, and all that God has blessed me with how can I not cry out  "My God...My God...why have You accepted me?"

Think on this today...

God on you...

DYING TO SELF

II Corinthians 5:9
Therefore, also we have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him (God)

No thought to my own selfish desires that have gotten me in trouble. No thought to my own selfish desires that have brought about destruction in my life. My focus now is on pleasing God. Turning away from the darkness of addiction to the light of surrender and receiving this new life in Christ, I have a single purpose ....to please Him. That my life might reflect the goodness that has been given to me.

Ephesians 5:8 & 10
For you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord: Walk as children of light.
Trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
Here again the focus of my life should be going about my daily activities, but allowing God's Holy Spirit to direct me each moment. With every decision made, our aim should be to please God. How can I know what pleases God? Get in the book....a.k.a the Bible. Read it. Study it. Digest it. You might be surprised at what happens.

John 8:29
"And He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him."
Why should I live my life to please God? Because when Jesus walked this earth, that was His goal. To be pleasing to His Father. To do only those things that He knew would please Him. What things actually please God. Well, for starters.........how about Obedience. Simply doing what we are told to do. Wow! I could have had a V-8!!!!

Luke 9:23
And He said to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me."
Pleasing God begins with dying to self. Realizing that this new relationship we have with Christ, began with the act of us dying. Now we are resurrected to a new way of living. One that has no place for selfish, self-centered thoughts and desires. This is so opposite of the way the world system operates, but it is the economy of heaven. I can only cease to be selfish when I truly trust God that He will meet my needs and has my best interest at heart. Then and only then can I truly walk out a life that is pleasing to Him. All of this that I  have wrote of this morning is a process. It is growth and learning and messing up and being forgiven. But it truly is the heart of God.

God on you......

50

Well sweet heart we made it. Fifty years ago today you became my wife and I became your husband. I look at this photo and I know that it is Vicki and me, but we had no idea of the twists and turns that life would throw at us.

I had someone ask me what our secret was in staying together for 50 years. That was an easy one........She is, and always will be, my best friend. As some would put it, "we have weathered the storms of life...but at the same time, we have enjoyed the gentle rain of our Father's love." We have felt His discipline when we sought to go and do things the way we wanted to, giving no thought to what His will may have been for us. At the same time we have been showered with His grace, mercy, compassion and love.

If anything could be said about those two young folks in the picture it would be that they were teachable. We didn't really know what that meant at the time, but we learned as situation and circumstance became the tool that God used. Now here today on this anniversary all I have to do is look around and see the grace, mercy, and gifts that God has given to Vicki and I. Our two sons, Chad and Josh.......their wives, Robin and Heather....and of course our two grand children, Tyler and Ashley.

These past few weeks leading up to today, I told Vicki that I do believe we are like Jimmy Stewart in the movie "It's A Wonderful Life". We are the richest folks on Greene Street. Oh our bank account isn't overflowing with money. We don't live in a mansion. We don't dress in designer clothes, but our richness comes from our heavenly Father who has had His hand upon us the entire time we've been married. He kept His hand on us even when we rejected Him in order to do what we wanted to do. We spent 7 years in what I refer to as our "wilderness wanderings" before we came back like the prodigal son. God truly is faithful even when we were not.

I told Vicki last night, "Let's do another 20 years...what do you say?" What God truly joined together on that night back in 1972 has withstood many efforts by the devil to tear us apart. Thank you Lord.

So today, Vicki and I will open up a boatload of memories and spill them out one by one. Relishing the time we've been together, but very much aware that we still have a ways to go.

So this morning, my heart and my love is for the woman that God brought into my life. She is my forever love.

Happy anniversary honey! I love you....

"Nice" Michael Bynum. Now that is a whole other story, how I came to be labeled "Nice".
