THE GUISE

World events moved along last night. Governments making decisions. Financial institutions all scrambling to put themselves in a position to increase their influence and income.  Military movements in countries as land grab's went back and forth, and amidst all this chaos and confusion an event took place without anyone's knowledge.

Last night Brook and David Finlayson (along with yours truly) gathered in Southside at David's house for a "GUISE" reunion.  Something we'd been trying to do for a number of years. THE GUISE was the name that we chose for the three of us when we played at various venues (some of which we were asked to not come back). Anyway, it was a grand evening of memories, songs, laughter, songs, and the sound of three acoustic guitar's seeking out chords long forgotten. Oh the voices could not reach some of the notes we use to (sorry guy's about the lack of "high" notes on Arnie Sanford's song. Someone moved the notes beyond my capability of not just finding them, but hitting the right ones. The fingers sometimes missed chords or completely forgot them altogether, but the hearts. The three hearts still burned with a passion for the music and the opportunity to worship once again together.

The beginning of the Guise happened at Brook's house back in 1988. We had gotten together just to  hang out and play, when David began to sing "Would You Like To Sing My Song."  Now we had never even thought about playing together, and I'm not sure why, but something happened that night. As David took the lead and was moving through the first verse, Brook and I brought harmony in behind David's singing. We had not planned it, as it was just one of those things that happened. But when it did, we kind of looked at each other with the look of "WHAT WAS THAT?" We knew that we knew, that we had found something. So we began to practice and play for different gatherings.  More than anything, we just had fun and enjoyed each others company. Part of our job was to keep David from drifting off into the nether regions with his comedy and comments between songs.

We played more times than I can count for SKYLIGHT coffee house, as it became kind of a home base for us. As with anything, the years have a way of pulling at lives drawing people on different journey's. Ours was not different as we each found the path God had called us to walk out. We played several other times during this stretch from 1988 till today, but they became fewer and less frequent. That is why last night was so special to me. Just to hang out with these guys and make some music........it doesn't get any better. I'm very grateful to have been a part of THE GUISE. Last night was no different. Last night was for us....just us. To remind us of the good times God gave us, and that life isn't over yet. So don't count out the possibility that there will be a GUISE reunion somewhere along the way.

God on you....
