Phones, Phones, Everywhere Are Phones!
Psalm 119:11
Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You.
There's a new malady going around...
One that is affecting folks on a massive scale....
What's it called?
"Phone Separation Anxiety"....
People forget or misplace their phones. They leave home, and when they discover they do not have their phones, anxiety hits hard.
"What if somebody sends me a message?"
"What if somebody Tweets me?"
I'm no longer in touch with the world...what'll I do?"
Give them their phone, and the anxiety goes away. It's like their lifeline...their touchstone to their past (has all their photo's stored)....to their friends (Let's share with each other)...and their future (appointments are stored). The phone almost becomes their best friend. Go to Wal-mart and you'll see scores of people, phones out, scrolling...scrolling...scrolling....keep that info moving.
Now what if we treated the Bible in the same manner....
What if there was such a thing as "Biblical Separation Anxiety"?
I love the verse from Psalm 119....
"Your word I have hidden in my heart"....
You don't hide things that aren't valuable.
You don't hide things that don't matter to you.
Here the Psalmist tells us that the word of God is so valuable and worthy, that the only place it can be of use is to be hidden in our hearts...Did you notice that it didn't say "Your word I have hidden in my brain". Not saying we check our noodles in when we come to Christ, but the real effectiveness of Scripture takes place in the heart.
Another thing....
You can't hide a word unless you have read The Word.
You have to make time for study.
People tell me all the time..."God never speaks to me. I never hear Him."
I ask them, "How much time do you spend each week reading the Bible?"
Usual answer revolves around "I don't really have much time"...to "It so hard to understand Scripture."
Well, if you don't have much time to read Scripture...then doing so is not very valuable to you. What I have found in my own life is that if something is valuable to me, I'll make time for it.
Yes, the Bible is hard to understand sometimes....but before you read it, pray and ask God to give you understanding and wisdom. As far as the excuse, God never speaks to me...if you read the Bible, take what you've read to heart, God will speak. His first and primary way of talking to us is through His Scripture.
So next time you get ready to leave home....
Check and make sure you have your car keys, your wallet AND your cell phone.
Oh yeah...one last thing.
Make sure the word is hidden in your heart. Doing so will keep you from sinning against God.
Not a bad deal...
Not bad at all...
God on you..
