Been thinking a lot on the Holy Spirit of God. He truly is the one and only Power given to humanity that can lead us daily. Sometimes I think He gets relegated to the back burner, so to speak, as if He isn't as important as the Father and the Son.
The very fact that the Holy Spirit is there in the opening verse of Genesis speaks to His place in the trinity. Make no mistake "God Created", but the Spirit was there. Some translations say that the Spirit was hovering....or moving over the face of the waters. Some use the term "Brooding".
In a commentary written by David Guzik, we read, The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters: When God began to transform the earth into something beautiful and compatible with His great plan, He started with the work of the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit begins every work of creation or re-creation.
i. “The first divine act in fitting up this planet for the habitation of man was for the Spirit of God to move upon the face of the waters. Till that time, all was formless, empty, out of order, and in confusion. In a word, it was chaos; and to make it into that thing of beauty which the world is at the present moment, even though it is a fallen world, it was needful that the movement of the Spirit of God should take place upon it.” (Spurgeon)
All work (Interaction of God with man) begins with the work of the Holy Spirit. #1) convicting us of our sin. #2.) Leading us toward the saving work that Jesus did in order to secure our salvation and forgiveness of our sin. Just like the verse in Genesis describing the condition the world was in (Formless, empty, and covered in darkness) such was our lives before we were saved. We may think that we had it all together when it came to living, but we didn't.
Such things as a heart living in unforgiveness and separated from God cannot be measured by what the world believes is success. Money.......fame.......power.....all are the standard the world uses to proclaim a successful life. God sees it differently. We read in Isaiah 59:1-2 - Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear to dull to hear, but your iniquities have separated you from your God. Your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear."
God fills us with His Holy Spirit when we turn will and live over to His care. Notice that I said, "Fills"......not just give us a little...or a taste of His presence. He fills us to overflowing with His Holy Spirit. So why do so many receive the salvation, but do not walk in the fullness that has been given to us? Maybe it is because we are not taught too. Maybe it is because we don't understand exactly what has been afforded us by this God who loves beyond measure. Maybe it is because we simply don't take the time to ask God to instruct us on "How to follow the leading of His Holy Spirit." Could be that we simply take for granted that the Spirit is there and there is nothing more we need to do.
I do not want to waste any more time by remaining ignorant of the work of the Holy Spirit in my life. I want to commune with Him as He teaches me how to live out the words of the Scripture I read. I think maybe I want the Holy Spirit brooding IN me and not simply over me.....
God loves me
Jesus saved me
Holy Spirit guides me.
