WHERE IS YOUR TREASURE KEPT?

Seeing this picture brought back a lot of memories for me. If you were a boy, living in the 50's / 60's, then you probably had a cigar box. "Why?" You may ask. Well, it was the repository for everything valuable to a young boy. It was safer than Ft. Knox, and was big enough for the things that were important.

Chances are you would find a pocket knife, a wad of string (never know when you might need this), a rock that had been picked up because it just looked old. There would probably be the most valuable of your baseball cards, and other assorted things that were high on a boy's list of treasure. It was an unspoken rule of the house that no one bother the contents of the sacred box. It was the place where treasure was hidden.

Jesus spoke about treasure, and our ability to hide those things that we deemed to be important. Trouble is, the things we value are usually things of this world.
Matthew 6:19-21 - "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

I think maybe the focus of these words of Jesus is about what we value, not where we are to keep them. The things of this world are like the prizes you win at a carnival. Shiny, bright, colorful, but are nothing more than cheap trinkets designed to catch your attention. The things of God are eternal and possess a value beyond human comprehension. Such is why I need the Holy Spirit to open my heart and mind and see the true value of what Christ has done for me, and to set my course to follow Him daily.

So, let me ask you again. "What is valuable to you? And where are you keeping it?" Food for thought here on Monday, June 14th.

God on you...
